Poetry Essay

Poetry Essay Final

Parents show their love to their children in similar and different ways. Through the relationship between the father and son in the first poem, “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden, the author wants us to know that the way that the father loves his son. The father would do anything for his child even if they didn't notice. In addition, in the other poem, “My Papa’s Waltz” byTheodore Roethke, the author wants us to know that even though the father and the son are roughhousing, that is how the father shows his love to his son. No doubt about this, both poems have similarities and differences about how parents can show their love and affection towards their kids.
Parents show their love to their kids in different ways. In “Those Winter Sundays” the child is the voice of the poem and he states “I’d wake and hear the cold splintering, breaking. When the rooms were warm, he’d call.”, this shows that the father made a sacrifice for the child by waking up in the freezing cold morning and making a fire so that his child would be warm after the house was heated. The child doesn’t really see that his dad is showing his love even by doing these small acts, he is still showing love whereas it might be different from how other people show affection towards their kid. In “My Papa’s Waltz,”, the son is the speaker of the poem again and he says, “We romped until the pans slid from the kitchen shelf.” This shows that the father and son are having a fun time even when they are roughhousing and making a mess in the kitchen. In addition, the son knows that the father loves him from what they are doing together, he knows that it is love at a young age. The poems show that there are different ways to loving your child.
Parents can show their love in similar ways. In “My Papa’s Waltz” the child is speaking and he says, “ Then waltzed me off to bed still clinging to your shirt.” This shows that after all the roughhousing and fun they had, he went to bed by clinging to his fathers shirt and going off to bed steadily and soundlessly. It relates to the other poem where the father wakes up and makes he fire for his son in the splintering cold morning.
The two parents show their love to their kids in the same way. Both of hem are doing little acts that might not be seen as love. Both parents are “tucking” their kids into warmth. One by lighting a fire and making the house cozy, and the other by bringing the child to bed and tucking him in. Parents can show their love to their children in similar ways.
Parents show their love to their children in the same and different ways from one another. In “My Papa’s Waltz” and “Those Winter Sundays,” I think that these two authors are trying to show through writing how much these fathers love their children even if they’re showing it in the same or different ways.
